Kenneth Golovko joins HED as National Engineering Practice Leader
Kenneth Golovko, a seasoned engineering leader with a reputation for shaping the industry’s approach to architecture and engineering integration, has joined HED in its Los Angeles office. Serving as the National Engineering Practice Lead, the move represents a focus on deepening the firm’s commitment to integrated engineering and architectural services to provide greater design excellence in both form and function.

Ken Golovko’s 25+ years in the A/E industry have ranged from providing energy analysis for a multinational food and beverage manufacturer to leading multidisciplinary teams through hundreds of millions in design work. Ken’s passion for integrated design stems from his varied experience on both the contracting side and design side of the project development process. This passion has also led to a strong reputation for leadership of Design/Build projects, where he has worked to ensure that design solutions meet mission needs such as the pressing topics of resiliency and energy performance.

“Our firm has gone through significant growth in the last couple of years, and we have felt focused on ensuring strong engineering leadership through that growth,” said HED CEO J. Peter Devereaux, FAIA, LEED AP. “We are excited to have Ken join our team to help craft our strategic approach to both engineering integration as well as capturing new engineering assignments for our talented, growing group of engineers.”

Prior to joining HED, Golovko worked most recently as an Associate Vice President with AECOM. He has also been a long-time volunteer Board Member with the Orange Empire Chapter of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers) organization and with the Ketchum Downtown YMCA in Los Angeles.

“HED has a strong reputation across the country for delivering high quality work for its clients. The firm has been a long-time leader in the integrated design movement, I am truly honored to be joining this team,” said Ken Golovko. “With eight offices now spread across the country, I am confident that we will continue to grow HED’s reputation for its engineering work, and I look forward to helping to enhance the multi-office collaboration and knowledge sharing in the years ahead.”

Bharat Patel shares how one of the most energy intensive facilities is ZNE at greenTECHNOLOGY
California is the first government entity in the country to require and implement ZNE on all new and major renovation building projects, and is working to transform 50% of existing state building area to ZNE. How does the state define efficiency and ZNE for its own facilities, and how is this achieved on new and existing buildings? How does the state obtain renewable energy? Learn from state resources, case studies, and examples of how CA is walking the walk.

On May 16, Engineering Leader Bharat Patel will be speaking at the greenTECHNOLOGY Sustainable Facilities Forum on the California Air Resources Board Vehicle Emissions Testing Center – Riverside and its sustainability achievements.

Opening in 2020, the Air Resources Board of California Vehicle Emissions Testing Center (ARB) is slated to become the global authority on vehicle emissions testing and research.

A partnership between the California Department of General Services (DGS) and Air Resources Board, the 14-acre, 300,000 gross-square-foot campus will feature some of the most advanced testing facilities on the Western Seaboard: State-of-the-art test cells for vehicles ranging in size from motorcycles to semi-trailers trucks. Dedicated portable emission measurement and onboard diagnostic testing. And some of the most advanced fuel testing capabilities in the world.

To ensure longevity and minimize expensive upgrades, complex equipment, delicate instrumentation and high energy loads must be underpinned by flexible mechanical and electrical infrastructure, easily adaptable with only minor modifications—and without the need for reconstruction saving valuable resources.

Boston Data Center Design Leaders Speak at NVTC
The data center industry has a history of designing facilities that deliver world-class innovation, readiness, and efficiency. As the practice of data center design continues to evolve, this continues to hold true, in shorter and shorter cycle times. Meeting growing demand while maintaining reliability, security, and reinvention takes specialized skill and knowledge.

Architecture and Design Principals Robert Stein, AIA, LEED AP and Chad Fowler, AIA, LEED AP, will be speaking within a select, expert panel of architectural and engineering design leaders on these very challenges. Entitled “Data Center Designs,” the event seeks to educate and engage members and invitees of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) in Herndon, VA on May 9. This event is timely given that Northern Virginia recently became the world’s first data center market to reach one gigawatt of capacity, making it one of the largest geographic hubs for data traffic in the world. HED has been involved in roughly 420.6MW of that 1GW, or roughly 40% of the capacity of this market.

Robert Stein is a principal of HED who has worked closely with institutional and corporate clients for over 40 years to establish goals and objectives and accomplish both through his oversite of design. Chad Fowler is a principal and design leader and is one of the most knowledgeable architects for data center design. Together, their real-world experience with data center design and strategic planning ranges back to the early days of "Data Center Alley" to the latest in designs for hyperscale and enterprise. Along with colleagues from other firms, they will present on some of their greatest project successes and speak specifically to HED’s exemplary skill and specialization in hyperscale design.
