Pediatric compounding pharmacy
In need of a space to provide a safe, USP 797-compliant environment for drug preparation for pediatric patients, UC Davis Health System teamed with HED to accomplish their needs. The 6th floor Pharmacy is a peaceful area that focuses on the specific formulary and dosage needs of the system’s smallest patients at the highest levels of accuracy and safety.

Efficiency of movement was important, as the area is limited in size and the drug storage carousel had to be aligned with the primary structure. The pass-through refrigerator was put to use to improve flow, and the workstations were placed thoughtfully to allow teams to be visible and efficient.

Interlocking breakaway sliding doors were used to facilitate an error-proof use of the ante-room arrangement while avoiding a complex interconnection with the fire alarm system.
Although the volume of pediatric drugs could be accommodated in the hospitals CIVA (Centralized Intravenous Additive) pharmacy, a separate pediatric pharmacy was designed for 2 critical reasons.
Pediatric dosages for the smallest humans are tiny, having a team focused on these unique compounds can reduce errors and improve QA/QC.
An emergency such as a building system failure, flood, or other event in the CIVA pharmacy would leave this hospital without a USP 797 compliant compounding facility. The new pediatric compounding pharmacy provides redundancy to CIVA and could produce critical doses for the entire hospital in the event of an emergency.
