When selecting a new location for our San Diego office, HED’s workplace design team considered amenities, the variety and choice of available workspaces, access to the outdoors, and the capacity to host events when choosing a new office space. Employee surveys and test fits of multiple buildings were undertaken to see which space would fit HED best based on desired conveniences and the needs of staff.
The building, chosen for its strategic mix of amenities, is of the brutalist architectural style. The HED design team embraced the exposed concrete waffle slab ceiling and brick exterior while using material and color selections to soften and balance the architecture with the interior.
The office showcases the HED brand with intelligent, subtle graphics throughout the office while considering the flavor of the San Diego location–coastal, but urban. The office uses a mix of materials and color palettes that associate with this coastal feel, including representations of the red clay areas of Torrey Pines, sand tones in millwork, lush plantings, and sweeping views, increasing biophilia and appreciation of nature.
