Among the most technically sophisticated facilities of its kind, the San Diego County Medical Examiner and Forensic Center is home to San Diego County’s Medical Examiner, Veterinary Medicine and Environmental Health laboratories.
The Medical Examiner spaces include seventeen autopsy stations, a homicide and teaching autopsy suite with a viewing balcony, X-ray, and labs for instrumentation, DNA, histology, toxicology and anthropology.
The Veterinary Medicine and Environmental Health areas feature agricultural analysis and domestic and wildlife necropsy rooms, multiple specialized labs—including a DNA lab for identification of zoonotic and emerging diseases vital to public health—and accompanying lab support. All spaces meet the highest containment and sterile environment standards, and are designed to accommodate both clean and dirty protocols.
With the completion of the new LEED Silver facility, San Diego County now has the tools to harness tremendous breakthroughs in the forensic sciences; track trends in diseases, trauma and addiction; solve crime; and uncover new answers to some of the most critical health questions of our time.
