Treating patients with reimagined, comprehensive care.
Collaboratively designed for individualized healing.
As the only National Cancer Institute Research Program in the region, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor hospital had a growing need to expand and enhance the facility’s nationally-renowned cancer research program. The addition balances its welcoming, open spaces with more serene, private settings. The new state of the art infusion center is spread across an exterior-facing glass wall, bathed in natural light and featuring private bays with room for guests and loved ones to accompany the patient. These adjustments create a more reflective and comfortable atmosphere for patients, who can receive treatment peacefully in private while overlooking an outdoor, enclosed healing garden rather than in the crowded interior of a hospital, making St. Joe’s one of the most attractive cancer centers in the state.

Results
This expanded facility is home to 38 exam rooms and offers a separate entrance and exit for patients, providing a concierge-like oncology-care experience.
By implementing Lean principles into the design (such as the removal of check-in and check-out processes), the Cancer Center can make each patient’s experience a smooth flowing one. Now patients head directly to treatment areas and the registration process is done in the room.
Landscaping was designed with patient and staff wellbeing in mind. By strategically locating quick-rotation exam rooms at the interior of the building, maximum emphasis is placed on the exterior walls where clinical staff and patients awaiting or undergoing treatment can enjoy the views of nature through expansive windows.
The design process was conducted in a highly collaborative way, with the design team hosting a Lean workshop with more than 60 participants. The results included simplified flow and organization, standardization, Lean care delivery methods, and integrated wellness inside and outside the building.
The patient experience is made seamless with improved circulation. Unlike other hospitals and clinics, its organization is open rather than maze-like, preventing disorientation and reducing the feeling of a “clinical” experience for patients.”
