Challenging the status quo.
High function meets high end
Located on a portion of an existing 15-acre brownfield site at the gateway to “Data Center Alley” in Ashburn, Virginia, Red Rum Data Center represents GI Partners first ground-up data center and their prototype for future data center developments. HED performed an initial feasibility study to determine how much IT capacity could be achieved, leading into a master plan. Our team worked closely with GI Partners and World Wide Mission Critical to develop design standards, as well as the building’s program requirements, including identifying the recommended critical cooling systems and electrical systems to meet their needs.

With the data center’s prominent location, it was important to design a facility that was not only high functioning, but also high end. The design team oriented the building and interior program so that the main entrance and office components were clad in elegant glass and metals while mechanical and electrical equipment were screened, providing an upscale, cohesive facade. Within the building, adaptability is key, providing flexible spaces suitable for a wide variety of end user types such as colocation and hyperscale companies.
Results
Red Rum Data Center is designed to meet LEED certification.
Stacked generators minimize the size of the equipment yard, maximizing the site's development to provide at least 24MW of IT capacity.
