Growing exponentially but with a stretched budget, the Cajon Valley Union School District approached HED with an interesting challenge: sequence the removal of nine aging portable classroom buildings with permanent elementary school buildings, while minimizing cost and interruption to instruction. The solution would need to be quick, efficient, sustainable, and introduce personality while creating a defined instructional quad. The obvious solution to the first few requirements was modular, but what about creating a solution that was customized, unique, and created a sense of personality?
HED created a partnership with modular building manufacturer Silver Creek Industries (SCI), to design a modular solution that is is efficient yet still presents a unique identity through design detailing, siting and landscape design that presents a rainbow of color for theming and wayfinding. This two-story modular building was delivered in components, constructed on the school campus with the modules coming together in only two days, and includes new classrooms, itinerant spaces, restrooms, landscape improvements, a defined quad, and site ADA upgrades. HED worked closely with the district and SCI to design a building concept and SCI created the construction documents.
