Restoring a building's original character.
Celebrating history
Continuing our long-standing partnership with the district, HED collaborated with Palo Alto High School to renovate and modernize its historic administration building. The original building was built in 1919, and with its adjacent bell tower, it serves as an iconic entry point for the entire campus.

A featured component of the project was the restoration of the historic meeting room—a large double-volume space with a vaulted wood ceiling and original wood casework. Prior to this renovation, the space was filled with cubicles and the original plank flooring had been covered with carpet. HED’s modernization recaptured this space for meeting and collaboration, restoring much of its original character. The historic, irreplaceable light fixtures were even given a custom retrofit so that they could be maintained.

The Palo Alto High School Tower modernization project received a 2024 Preservation Award from the Palo Alto Stanford Heritage (PAST).
The project involved accessibility upgrades, including a new elevator and exterior ramps, a renovated lobby and entry sequence to improve student and staff experience, renovated unisex restrooms, as well as updated interior finishes that highlighted the historic character of the building.
The team added a large patio to the exterior of the building meant to create a collegiate and ceremonial central focus for the campus quad.
The completion of Palo Alto High School's Tower marks the final project in the entire modernization of the school campus.
