Modular Classroom Clusters, Oak Park USD
Oak Park, CA
Flexible prototype.
Fast, reliable construction.
Providing greater predictability in uncertain times
Oak Park USD had an urgent need for more classrooms. Located in a suburban residential neighborhood, Medea Creek Middle School is one such school that addresses this need. The new classroom cluster, situated adjacent to the playfield from the main campus, consists of six modular learning studios grouped around outdoor learning commons and vegetable garden. HED worked closely with the manufacturer to design modular units that arrived onsite with systems and finishes, ready to be quickly and economically assembled.

By staggering the classrooms along the paved courtyard, indoor and outdoor learning environments are integrated. The outdoor classroom includes furniture, Wi-Fi, a trough sink, and shade sail structure and trees to shade it.

Results
Teachers are able to readily change the layout of the learning studio as lesson plans and activities change throughout the day.
Modular solutions can be both permanent and flexible enough to adapt to specific circumstances of site, program, and pedagogy. HED is currently working as district architect for the Oak Park Unified School District, and developing prototype educational clusters at four separate sites, including three elementary schools and one middle school.
Fast, reliable construction.
