To create a new satellite campus and home for the College of Health Sciences in San Diego, Point Loma Nazarene University selected HED to lead four phases of the reimagining and renovation of two existing, two-story office buildings in a corporate park. PLNU's Balboa Regional Center, home to the College of Health Sciences, offers state-of-the-art classroom, research, and fitness spaces for graduate students in PLNU's kinesiology, athletic training, exercise science, sport performance, sport management, physician assistant, physical therapy, and occupational therapy programs.
The first and second phases of transformation focused on the overall campus plan and arrival experience with a new front entrance, signage and branding. HED designed new classrooms, study spaces, the Center for Human Performance (CHP), student lounges, and offices. Exterior improvements consisted of a lobby entrance transformation, exterior deck for the CHP, student lounge, and a new outdoor roof deck amenity. Phase three included a new dean’s suite, specialized learning spaces for the occupational therapy graduate program, and features a collaboration between PLNU and the San Diego Padres' new indoor/outdoor biomechanics lab. Phase four rounds out the campus with a new state-of0the-art anatomy teaching lab and new office suites.
HED provided a revitalized landscape design to align with PLNU’s new campus identity, and a cohesive experiential graphics package to complement the university’s brand and focus on students’ well-being.
