HED Celebrates Groundbreaking of Los Angeles Pierce College Academic East Building in Woodland Hills, CA
HED proudly announces the groundbreaking of the Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) Academic East Building (AEB) in Woodland Hills, CA. Designed by HED, with McCarthy Building Co. as the General Contractor, the AEB marks a significant milestone for the LAPC campus, setting the stage for a dynamic and integrated educational environment.

The project team includes esteemed partners such as Saiful Bouquet as the structural engineer, Introba, Inc. as the MEP engineer, Psomas and Associates as the civil engineer, Nuvis as the landscape architect, DTR Consulting Services as the building envelope consultant, NV5 (The Sextant Group) as low voltage / ICT designer, KGM Architectural Lighting as the lighting designer, Introba, Inc. as the technology integration consultant, MZM Consulting as the CaSP Consultant, and Veneklasen as the acoustical designer. Together, this collaborative team is dedicated to bringing the vision of the AEB to life, ensuring it becomes a prominent and sustainable addition to the LAPC campus.

The Academic East Building, spanning approximately 56,000 square feet over two stories, will serve as the new home for the math, psychology, and computer science programs. Positioned on a site currently used as an athletic practice field, the AEB will integrate seamlessly with the existing topography and adjacent campus amenities. This strategic location aims to create a bustling campus hub, fostering cross-disciplinary synergies and providing a gateway to the northeast campus.

The design of the AEB is anchored by three guiding principles: identity, diversity, and integration.

Identity: The AEB will offer a dedicated approach, entry, image, and experience, building a strong sense of community among students and faculty. The building features an intimate courtyard leading to the main entrance, a central lobby that serves as a campus hub, and an arcade providing outdoor shaded study areas.

Diversity: The building's design accommodates a variety of learning styles with spaces ranging from highly collaborative lobby areas to intimate outdoor patios. The main hub/lobby opens to a courtyard, providing a relaxing and collaborative space easily accessible from classrooms and labs.

Integration: The AEB's connection to the campus is a key consideration, with an entry plaza linking pedestrian circulation corridors to the main entrance. The two-story lobby serves as a center for collaboration, idea exchange, and innovation, drawing diverse campus constituents towards the building's core.

Designed to achieve LEED v4 Silver certification, the AEB is an all-electric building with a high-performance envelope, lighting, HVAC, and plumbing systems, positioned to be net zero ready. Preliminary energy model analysis by HED shows a 42% reduction in building energy use without solar PVs, and a 52% reduction with the inclusion of a rooftop solar PV system. The building's design also includes biofiltration systems to educate students on stormwater management, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices.

The Academic East Building's strategic design and location will create a new hub on campus, offering flexibility, safety, and maintainability while being adaptable to future technologies and infrastructure needs. The building will provide a place for students, faculty, and staff to meet, work, and connect with nature, furthering LAPC's goals and agricultural ethos.

“As a significant gateway building, the AEB will feature abundant glazing to connect indoor and outdoor spaces, promoting energy efficiency and creating an inviting atmosphere,” says Brent Miller, HED’s Higher Education Business Leader, “The exterior design reflects a Mediterranean style, with white-washed plaster planes, pitched tile roofs, and rhythmic openings, integrating the building into the campus context and giving users a strong sense of place.”

HED and McCarthy are honored to be part of this transformative project and looks forward to the positive impact the Academic East Building will have on the Los Angeles Pierce College community.
